Precinct to provide jobs boost for ACT

25 October 2016

GEOCON’s Section 200 development is set to deliver a substantial jobs boost to the ACT.

In a recent Strategic Planning Report, it was estimated that Section 200 could potentially employ in excess of 2500 construction workers over the life of the project.

Section 200 will be Canberra’s largest mixed-use development incorporating around 1300 residential apartments, a hotel under the Abode Hotels chain, various retail and commercial spaces.

Pending all development approvals have been secured, construction of the project is scheduled to commence in 2017.

In addition to the projected construction jobs, the project has the ability to generate around 400 permanent jobs within the precinct itself once fully developed. This is based on the proposed allocation of office floor space and other commercial and community land uses, such as hotel staff, restaurant staff and the take up of office spaces by local businesses.

“The benefits of this development will continue to flow into the local Belconnen community specifically, as well as the broader ACT, long after the construction phase ends,” said GEOCON’s Managing Director Nick Georgalis.

“According to the 2015 ACT state workforce snapshot, jobs in construction are projected to grow by more than 16 per cent. GEOCON will no doubt play a huge role in driving that growth, helping create more local jobs and business opportunities and injecting vital funds into the economy.

“We’re proud of not only what Section 200 will become to Canberra – a thriving new destination for locals and tourists – but for also what it will give to Canberra.”
